Shedd Aquarium Adult Activities Bring Diving Closer to Home!


Chicago's Shedd Aquarium offers a number of adult education series programs that bring reef experiences home.. a short getaway for divers and marine life enthusiasts alike. The sessions offer a fun way to learn more about a variety of marine species and ocean life. Topics vary from "Adult Breakfast with the Sharks " to "Underwater Photography Workshop and Dive in the Coral Reef Exhibit" for certified scuba divers only...

Participate in a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the sharks at Shedd. Venture behind the scenes to learn about the reproductive cycles of sharks. Discover how unique the anatomy of sharks is.

Plus, you will have the chance to meet some Shedd experts and discover how a physical exam is performed on these incredible fish. Then you'll enjoy a breakfast buffet and have a chance to explore the rest of the aquarium. Fee includes admission for the day to the aquarium, Oceanarium and Wild Reef. The Underwater Photography Workshop and Dive in the Coral Reef Exhibit is a great way to prepare for upcoming dive trips. Join underwater photographer Bo Harper for this comprehensive survey of underwater photographic principles and techniques along with a guide to the many underwater photo systems available.

Suitable for both novice and experienced photographers, the casual, graphics-supported discussions cover general photographic principles, basic through advanced techniques, film types, creative composition and macro through wide-angle formats. Learn how taking a camera underwater can increase your knowledge of the environment and your enjoyment of diving.

Put your newfound knowledge and skills to use during two confined-water sessions. The first will give you a chance to adapt your diving skills to underwater photography techniques and try different photo equipment systems. During the second session, you'll have a special opportunity to dive among the residents of the aquarium's Caribbean Reef exhibit. Come back to Shedd for a night of show-and-tell to share your photos with your classmates.

Participants should bring their own scuba equipment for the pool session and Caribbean Reef exhibit dive. Camera equipment will be supplied by the Aquarium. Participants who prefer to use their own camera equipment may do so.

Pool session: Mon., March 27, 6-9 p.m.
Picture review: Tues., March 28, 6-8 p.m.
Coral reef dive: Wed., March 29, 6-10 p.m. or Thurs., March 30, 6-10 p.m.
Photo sharing: Wed., April 12, 6-9 p.m.
Fee: $450 ($400 members)
You must be a certified scuba diver to participate in the dive sessions.

Looks like some very neat activities.  Great way to tune up your photography skills and learn some new techniques.

Nearly 5 hour drive a bit of a problem for me.
