I was wondering if anyone can tell me how long our certification is good for and if we ever need a refresher course.

Most certifying agencies, with GUE being the only exception as far as I know, have c-cards that don't expire.  Whether this is good a good or bad thing is the source of many debates.  If it has been a long time since you were in the water, a refresher course is never a bad idea.

You don't need a refresher course to keep your certification valid, but if you haven't been in the water for ages, it's never a bad idea to do a quick refresher to get back in the groove.

The YMCA used to have a provision for recertification on their entry level cards- but may have done away with that by now.

Almost all diveshops offer some type of refresher course and it would be a good thing to look into if you haven't been in the water in a while.
