Diving inside the Milwaukee Breakwater?
Hey, all
I've been grabbing the shipwreck data off the Wisconsin Historical Society's Maritime Trail shipwreck registry, and trying to plot it into a GPS and/or Google Maps. I've worked through Kenosha through Sheboygan counties, and have just over 200 GPS coordinates for shipwrecks.
I was able to load them into my gps this morning, and took my boat out to go look around.
There are dozens of listed shipwrecks inside the breakwater in the Milwaukee Harbor. At one point, we were within a mile of a dozen shipwrecks. Some are shown almost right on top of each other.
I can supply the list as I have it now. I'll be adding to the list as I get the time. But, with 300+ more to go just in Lake Michigan, this may take a while!

I would be interested in seeing your list. I live just outside of Milwaukee. If you need a dive buddy I would be interested in diving with you on some of these.

Hi, Jeff.
I've added a variant of the file I have. WISCUBA doesn't like csv files.
I was using the following website to convert the coordinates to GPS and Google Maps locations.

You can download the txt file, change the file extension to a csv, then load that into the website. That will allow you to save it as a GPX for downloading to a GPS or a KML for Google Earth.

And, I'm always interested in a new dive buddy.

I called the Coast Guard. The duty officer said there is no diving inside the breakwater. Too bad. There are a LOT of wrecks in there.

Can they legally shut down a body of water for diving?

Because of the threat to commercial shipping, homeland security, and the automatic navigation hazard that a diver creates, the Coast Guard can restrict diving.
The City of Milwaukee has set a number of regulatory hurdles to diving inside the breakwater. They include, if I remember correctly, being bonded/insured to a certain amount, getting a permit from the City Council for salvage/surveying, and a couple other things that basically put it out of the reach of anyone short of a commercial/salvage diving company.
