Found this on a UK site. It seems that freediving was in the olympics back in 1900.
UNDERWATER SWIMMING At the second modern Olympic Games contested in Paris in 1900, the most unusual event to be held was underwater swimming. It was decided prior to the competition that two points would be awarded for each metre swum underwater. In addition, one point was added to the scoring of each individual for every second he stayed below the surface. Held over a maximum of 60m. Winners: Charles DeVandeville (France), who swam 60 meters in a time of 1 minute and 8.4 seconds (score:188.4 pts). André Six (FRA) 185.4 pts (60m, 1:05.4) Peter Lykkeberg (DEN) 147.0 pts (28.5m, 1:30.0 This was the first and only time underwater swimming was held at the Olympic Games Jon |

If we can have ping-pong (er table tennis) in the Olympics surly we can have freediving.
