Redgranite ice conditions? - MikeS - 02-06-2006

Can anyone report of ice or lack of it here?  I was wondering since it is being reported that much of Wazee is clear.

I stopped in on 1/28 to check out the conditions and it was ice covered.  The ice looked pretty crappy but no obvious open water.  The west area by the restaurant looked like it was closest to being open but it wouldn't take much effort to find yourself under ice even if you could get in there.

As an "X" Ice Fisherman (I took Up Diving Instead) [glow=red,2,300]Assume All Ice Is UnSafe! Especially this Year![/glow]
This Year We Have COLD WATER DIVING but NOT SAFE ICE DIVING!
             IT's That Simple!

Had a great dive yesterday with some of the board guys over at Red Granite yesterday. Ice was about 8 inches thick and solid. Visibility was in the 10-15 ft range, water temp 39 degrees.

Anyone been to Redgranite lately?  Ice in or out?  Visibility?

Re: Redgranite ice conditions? - Vtach - 04-03-2006

I drove by again just last Wednesday and the ice is starting to go.  It was open a bit around the edges but not open enough to dive.  I would suspect that is should be divable by middle to late next week.

Have a buddy who went to Red Granite on Friday and all the ice was gone.  Water temp was 37 and the viz was very bad.

It was shitty when dove there in January.  Doesn't look like this is going to be a good year for Dead Granite visibility.  I have a feeling this is going to be a poor vis year in quite a few spots, hopefully not the Great Lakes. Sad

Re: Redgranite ice conditions? - jrkmbeck - 04-08-2006

Went to Red Granite yesterday afternoon from about 4:00 to 6:00pm.  Water temp was 41 at the surface and 38 degrees at 80 feet.  Viz was amazing but prbably wont last long.  Dive was short becasue of a prior commitment but was able to do 35 minutes.  At 80 feet you could see the bottom and we found a boat at 80 feet we didn't know was there because usually it is very silty after 70 feet or so in the summer.  First dive with my new dry suit so I didn't get a lot of sight seeing in I was more occupied with my buoyancy.  Did not see any fish.

Hmmm, good vis huh?  I guess I retract my previous comment.
