Here's an idea that might prove to be a cool idea.  I was thinking that if you took some 1/2" UHMW polyethelene sheets and built a frame 4'x8'x1 1/2' and added floats to keep it on the surface, it would act like an ice cube tray, where you could just push out the block in the center and go diving without all the sawing/drilling/explosives currently needed to get an open hole. Big Grin

It's just an idea, so try to shoot it full of holes if you can.

The first shot, the DNR. Sad

How would you "anchor" (pun intended?) it to the bottom to keep it in place where you wanted it to stay before the water froze?

creative, but this would technically still be an open hole in the ice and you  know those pesky humans that might be too interested and fall through..not to mention the snowmobilers that may run over it at speed.....also..not the cheapest contraption to create and people would be guaranteed to screw around with it......( remember the gnomes..red granite)...besides...the explosives are fun and busting your ass preparing the ice dive site is half of the the fun and many of the wonderful stories like people falling in and sawing off legs etc. would be lost...and what fun would that be....
