I was out on the Northerner yesterday. This is a two masted schooner off Port Washington in 135 fow. The top 70 or 80 feet of water the viz was about 20 feet or so. Below that it opened up very nicely to about 70. Great dive.

As of 17:15 Sunday, the vis was still ASTOUNDING on the Northerner.
The whole ship was visible from 85', as it was when on the bottom.
It's too bad most of her kit was lifted off of her (rudder, wheel, nameboards, deadeyes). If she still had all that, it would look as if you could sail her right off the bottom and out onto the lake.
She had a tiller style rudder which is in a yard in Port Washington. The mast that is down now I understand was intact until a few years ago when a dive charter moored to it and pulled it over. A crying shame. The wreck was identified originally by a block and tackle found in the chain locker that bore the ships name. There for the name boards were already MIA in '76 when she was found. She is a pretty wreck all the same. One of my favorites to visit.

Thanks for the additional info. I was wondering how much damage had been done to her inadvertently over the years (think of the poor Niagra just up the coast >
 ).
I have also been thinking about where the mooring is tied now (port side bow on the rail) and was wondering if it might not be better to set a mooring into several blocks of concrete off of the wreck to minimize damage to this delicate little beauty.Â
I'd be more than willing to help with the task (both material and installation) if anyone else is interested in doing so too.
We did two dives on the Northerner yesterday. The vis was good, but not astounding.  It felt good to end my dry spell...It had been 3 weeks since I was in the water.  Stupid responsibilities!
